Essential Oils for Allergies and Hay Fever

Spring has sprung here in Australia and, if you’re anything like me, this news is a little bittersweet. On the one hand, we are treated to warmer weather, longer days and flowers blooming. On the other hand, the season of renewal brings with it enough pollen to leave my sinus congested, my eyes raw and me rhythmically sneezing in a mental fog.

Before I started using essential oils, I used to manage my allergies by taking two different types of antihistamines and a nasal spray daily. Even hopped up on antihistamines, I’d still struggle with brain fog and a general feeling of lethargy.

Now, however, I’m down to a single antihistamine each morning (because I’m allergic to animals but have 3 cats and 2 dogs), and the brain fog has lifted.

The big change came when I started diffusing essential oils throughout my house.

How to Cope with Allergies Naturally with Essential Oil

Essential oils are an effective way to naturally manage allergy symptoms and hay fever. The following essential oil recipes are intended to be blended directly into your aromatherapy diffuser and diffused in your home first thing in the morning and throughout the day.

Avoid using all but the final recipe in the evening as peppermint essential oil as well as more citrus essential oils have mood enhancing properties which can disrupt sleep.

Essential Oil Recipes for Allergies

Restore mental alertness and clear your mind

  • 7 drops - peppermint essential oil

  • 7 drops - lemon essential oil

  • 7 drops - lavender essential oil

  • 5 drops - cypress essential oil

Decompress and breathe

  • 7 drops - mint essential oil

  • 6 drops - peppermint essential oil

  • 6 drops - eucalyptus essential oil

  • 5 drops - pine essential oil

Sinus relief and decongestant

  • 7 drops - thyme essential oil

  • 5 drops - cassia essential oil

  • 4 drops - tea tree essential oil

Night time sinus relief

  • 7 drops - frankincense essential oil

  • 4 drops - lavender essential oil

  • 3 drops - sandalwood essential oil

The first thing I do as part of my daily routine throughout allergy season, is get my diffuser going. In the evening, just before I get into bed, I start diffusing the night time sinus relief blend in our bedroom. It helps me to breathe easily through the evening and contributes to me waking up feeling refreshed. Best of all, all three essential oils in the night time blend have powerful relaxation benefits which help your body get the restful sleep it so badly needs.
