5 Healthy Habits to Improve Your Self Care

Self care is about intentionally setting aside time in your day to support your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. You are the one responsible for dedicating time to care for yourself, and if you don’t make the time for it, then who will?

Life can become so busy, overwhelming and stressful at times, we are always on the go. Trying to do more, achieve more - it’s a constant juggling act. Often, we have intentions to work on our self care, but when it comes down to it, most of us feel like we just don’t have the time. We fear that if we stop even just for a moment, life will come crashing down.

We are convinced that slowing down and taking time out for ourselves might make us less productive, might stop us from getting on with doing the things we need to do. But the truth is, creating healthy habits to improve your self care will enhance your life in many ways. It's just about shifting your mindset. 

What if I told you that, creating healthy habits to improve your self care will actually increase your productivity and resilience? That slowing down, will actually help you achieve more in the long run.

Why? It all comes down to self-awareness. When you start tuning into your own needs and listening to yourself, you come to realise that all the pressure you put on yourself isn’t necessary. True, we all have things we need to do in our day, but the sense of urgency we place on tasks is usually just a deception of your own mind.

Creating self care habits teaches you how to tune into your body. You become aware of what you need in order to nourish your mind, body and soul. You start to realise that caring for yourself first allows you to become more focused in all other aspects of your life. 

Instead of feeling like you have to do things, you identify what is meaningful to you and experience a deeper sense of purpose in daily life.

My advice is, keep it simple.

Start by taking a few small steps each day, and over time you will be amazed by the big impacts. 

Self care is all about finding things that resonate with you. Ask yourself what makes me feel good? Listen to your body, tune in and get started today, even if it’s just one small step.

Set yourself a morning routine

Did you know that many of the most successful people in the world, swear by the importance of a structured morning routine? Sarah Wilson explains; “Having some sort of structure at the start of your day, is key to living a life that counts. It gets you out of bed with a purpose”

Start small, wake up 30 minutes earlier and set yourself a morning routine. Find what resonates with you, what nourishes your mind, body and soul. My morning routine consists of expressive writing, meditation and yoga. But choose what feels right to you.

Over time you can set yourself new goals, e.g. waking up an hour earlier. Remember baby steps, be kind to yourself.

Have a self-care night

Dedicate one night a week just for you. Take some time out to relax and unwind, make this a sacred time to do things that are nourishing for you.

You might like to take a hot bath with some of your favourite calming essential oils. Or perhaps cook yourself a nice healthy meal or spend some time reading a good book. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it makes you feel good. 

Do these tasks with purpose and mindfulness, knowing that you are worthy of this sacred time.

Start saying NO more

You might be wondering what saying no has to do with self care. Well let me tell you it has everything to do with it. 

Here’s something to think about, how often do you find yourself saying yes to doing things just to please others? How often do you say yes to things you don’t really want to do and then later regret it?

By saying yes to please others, you are going against yourself. Choosing to do things that don’t resonate with you drains your energy and causes stress and feelings of overwhelmed. This is why it’s so important to create healthy habits around what you choose to accept into your life.

We fear that by saying no people will think badly of us, but the truth is, saying no when things aren’t right for you, helps to set healthy boundaries. It allows you to find a healthy balance in your life.

Your body will always indicate a sign if something is a yes or a no. Here is a simple guide to tuning into your inner wisdom.

Yes = Warm, light, uplifting energy buzzing in your heart or solar plexus.

No = Heaviness, resistance and sometimes even a sharp or burning sensation in your heart or solar plexus.

It’s simple, next time you are asked to do something, tune into your body. It’s a wise tool and when you learn to trust it, you will always receive your answer.

Incorporate self-love mantras into your day

When your thoughts about yourself are kind and loving, you are more likely to take time out for self-care. Self-love mantras are a powerful tool for shifting your mindset from self-doubt to self-love. 

The thoughts you have about yourself influence every aspect of your life, so why not intentionally choose loving thoughts?
