Rose Essential Oil
by britten thompson
One of the most difficult essential oil to distil, rose essential oil has amazing regenerative effects on the skin as well as a number of other health benefits. This fragrant floral comes from elegant rose petals and can be distilled either with steam to produce rose otto, or with chemical solvents to produce rose absolute.
It is important to note that absolute essential oils are not the highest quality, however, they are still extremely fragrant and effective oils. Absolutes are created when the raw material used to create an essential oil doesn't yield a lot of the end product, such as the case with rose. Creating just 15ml or rose otto essential oil requires 65 pounds of rose petals! Using a chemical solvent increases the amount of oil that can be extracted from the raw material.
Because of the lower yield, Rose Otto Essential Oil tends to be quite costly. For this reason, a number of Essential Oil retailers will adulterate the oil. Sometimes, Rose Essential Oil will be diluted into a Carrier Oil such as Jojoba Oil. Other retailers will blend Pure Rose with Geranium Essential Oil or Palmarosa Essential Oil. Blending with a similarly scented Essential Oil helps keep the therapeutic benefits of Rose Essential Oil without the expense.
