Essential Oils for treating headaches

Essential Oils can be used to  treat ailments like headaches and migraines without the worry of the long list of potential side effects that come along with traditional pain relieves and over-the-counter headache and migraine treatments.

5 Essential Oils for treating headaches and migraines

When using Essential Oils topically, it is important to ensure you dilute them into a carrier oil. My personal favourite is coconut oil. If you're not a fan, or if you prefer a different oil, any cold pressed fruit or vegetable oil can be used, though I recommend avoiding maize or canola oil.

When creating your blend, start by adding five drops of Essential Oil to 30ml of carrier oil. If you find you'd like your blend to be stronger, add three drops of Essential Oil at a time.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint is one of my favourite Essential Oils. It also happens to have an extremely high concentration of menthol which helps to relax tense muscles while easing pain. Peppermint's high concentration of menthol makes it very powerful for treating tension headaches and migraines.

How to use Peppermint Essential Oil: Dilute five drops of the Peppermint oil into the carrier oil of your choice. Place the blend on the tips of the index finger on each hand and gentle massage your temples in a clockwise motion.

Be sure to avoid getting the Essential Oil anywhere near your eyes.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary Essential Oil has powerful analgesic properties, which basically just means it is a very effective oil when it comes to pain relief. To make it even more powerful, Rosemary offers anti-inflammatory benefits while improving circulation and relaxing muscles.

You can also add the blend to a hot bath, or diffuse the pure Essential Oil in an ultrasonic aromatherapy diffuser.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender is one of the most versatile Essential Oils. It is most commonly used to de-stress and to promote rest and relaxation. This Essential Oil wunderkind is also highly effective at treating headaches and migraines.

A recent study found that, after inhaling Lavender Essential Oil for 15-minutes, participants in the study reported a significant lessening of their headache and migraine pain.

How to use Lavender Essential Oil: Lavender is one of the few Essential Oils that is gentle enough to apply to adult skin undiluted. Place a drop on each of your index fingers and massage it into your temples. You can also use add a few drops to your bathwater, or diffuse Lavender in your ultrasonic aromatherapy diffuser.

Chamomile Essential Oil

Chamomile is most commonly used to promote rest and to treat anxiety. This soft, floral Essential Oil is also an effective pain reliever as it soothes muscles and eases tension.

Please note, if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, you should avoid Chamomile Essential Oil altogether.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

If you're struggling with pain related to sinus congestion, Eucalyptus oil can be a huge help. This Essential Oil opens nasal passages, clears sinuses and will ease sinus tension and headaches.

A recent study found that blending Eucalyptus and Peppermint Essential Oils created a relaxing effect which served to relax the body and mind. This resulted in a significant reduction in headache and sinus pain.

How to use Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Dilute Eucalyptus into the carrier oil of your choice. Massage the blend into your temples, over your sinuses and onto your chest. You can also diffuse pure Eucalyptus Essential Oil in your diffuser to relieve headaches cause by sinus congestion.

Essential Oil recipe for headaches

  • 30 drops - Lavender Essential Oil
  • 15 drops - Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 5 drops - Rosemary Essential Oil

For an even more effective blend, add ten drops of Chamomile Essential Oil as well.

Blend all of the oils listed above into a dark, glass bottle. Leave the oils for 24-hours before adding to your favourite carrier oil in a glass roller-ball bottle. Ensure you leave enough space in the roller-ball bottle to add additional Essential Oils.

Once you've diluted this blend into your carrier oil, you can apply it directly to your temples being careful to avoid the delicate skin around your eyes.

As with all Essential Oils and Essential Oil blend, store your headache roll-on in a cool dark place. Be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight.
