Natural Living & How it Cured Me
featured on the essential life
Four years ago, I was diagnosed with severe anxiety disorder & depression. I had just started college so life was already scary enough, but to add this diagnosis into the mix, my life felt like it was on a constant roller coaster.
So, what did I do?
I turned to medication, because what else do you do when you are a mentally ill 18 year old. I had no idea what to do. I knew of no other solutions. So, I listened to my doctor & was prescribed an anti-depressant.
Well, wrong decision because this anti-depressant only heightened my anxiety. I was a mess. I was not myself. I was ruining relationships without even knowing it.
I was suicidal.
That’s right, & it was the scariest part about this medication.
I don’t think I could ever bring myself to complete the act, but the extent my thoughts went to frightened me. I broke down.
My doctor immediately switched my medication, & I must say, the anti-anxiety medication I was then put on did make a difference. After a few years, I was able to feel myself again. But, honestly, I didn’t really feel myself completely until I made the decision to get off my medication & started looking into different natural ways of fighting my anxiety.
A More Natural Life
I was ready to make some changes. I wanted to be a healthier & happier version of myself.
I started yoga. I learned to appreciate the act of meditation & began to learn more about my body, one stretch at a time. I felt my muscles begin to strengthen, & my head begin to clear of all the stressors around me.
I began to look forward to this part of my day, knowing it was my time to feel safe & comfortable within my own body. I have begun to learn from others who have practiced yoga for a long time, taking in all they have to offer me. I am hoping to become certified in the practice, that way I can help others fight their own battles, because it is much harder to do it on your own, believe me.
Yoga can do magical things & anyone can do it.
But, I Didn’t Stop There
I knew I was going to need an alternative to my medication, I just didn’t know what.
So, I resorted to the ever so trustworthy, Pinterest. This is when I stumbled across essential oils. I learned the benefits that these oils can have on your brain & your body. I wanted to know more, I wanted to try them out for myself.
I decided to order a few just to test the waters, & let me just say, mind BLOWN!
I ordered a diffuser as well, because I love the concept of aromatherapy & wanted to see if this would help me with my sleeping. When it first came in the mail, I decided to immediately try them out.
Now, the cool thing about aromatherapy is that the affects are instant. You don’t have to wait to feel calm, you just feel it immediately, & it is all natural! No unhealthy chemicals & toxins, just all plant extracts!
I decided to try a blend of lemon & lavender & I felt at ease as I sat there breathing in the scents.
Of course, about two days later, my allergies hit (I ordered these right in the beginning of Spring) & they hit hard. So I immediately looked for a blend that would help. I discovered that a blend of lemon, lavender, & peppermint would do the trick. So that night, I decided to put those three oils in my diffuser & drift off to sleep. I slept from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. that night with no interruptions. Now, for the beginning of allergy season, this is usually unheard of for me.
I woke up the next morning calm, pleased & well rested.
What Does That Have to do With my Mental Health?
Right, because that is what we are talking about here right? Let me connect it all for you real quick.
You need to sleep well in order for your mind to work right. It is simple science. Studies show that when you sleep the suggested hours, your mind works faster, you are less irritable, & you also have more energy to complete your day. All of this has to do with your mental health, because your mental health is your overall health. It helps your body run, this is why you need to make it a priority.
What I Learned
I am still learning more on how to live naturally, but so far, my life has already changed in a positive way. I am happy, happier than I have been in four years. I am starting to live again, enjoy nature, spending time with friends & family.
These are easy changes, & you can make them too. I am nothing special, just a normal 22 year old girl who knew she needed to improve her life in order to be happy again. It is possible, & I promise, you can do it too.
