Creating A Morning Ritual Can Change Your Life
featured on the essential life
I used to believe that the best way to start my day off on the right foot was to tackle my to-do list immediately. From the moment my feet hit the floor, the race was on. I’d rush from sorting laundry to making the kids’ lunches to loading the dishwasher, & then back to the laundry all before driving the kids to school & starting my work day. If I wasn’t doing something “productive”, I wasn’t doing enough.
Why You Need to Create a Morning Ritual
The Danger of Over-Functioning
Despite all the effort I put in, I felt like I was spinning my wheels because my seemingly endless list of tasks was never quite complete. I was stressed out & anxious all the time. What I didn’t realise was that instead of getting ahead of the game as I’d intended, I was actually creating a sense of overwhelm in my life by diving head first into everything first thing in the morning.
Feeling frazzled all the time made me miserable, so I had to admit that the way I was doing things needed to change. I started to think about how I wanted to feel, and how I wanted to experience each day. What I wanted was to be more present, & to have a sense of calm & ease in my life.
Making a Change
In order to achieve that, I felt that I needed to start my day intentionally, so I created a very simple morning ritual for myself. Before I got out of bed, I would sit up, take some deep breaths, & think about how I wanted to feel that day. It didn’t take more than five minutes (because at the time that’s all I felt I could spare) but it worked! I felt happier & more relaxed throughout the day.
Now I spend about 20 minutes Meditating & sometimes journaling before I start my day. My routine has evolved over time, but this simple practice has made me calmer, less reactive to things I have no control over, & has drastically reduced my stress level. Surprisingly, it’s also made me much more productive than when I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off! It’s truly changed my life.
Create Your Own Morning Ritual
Ready to create your own morning ritual? Here are 3 tips to help you get started:
Think of it as play: Don’t get hung up on doing it “right.” If Meditation isn’t your thing, listen to a motivational message, read something inspiring, or do some stretching. Focus on how you want to feel, & do what allows you to feel that way.
A few minutes is enough: You don’t have to set your alarm for 5 am for this to work. Start with five minutes. If you want to work up to more time, great! But even if you only have a few minutes, you’ll see the benefits, I promise!
Be flexible: There’s no need to be rigid with your routine. If you want to try something new, feel free to change it up! My morning routine changes seasonally. In the summer, my work hours are more fluid, & the weather is great, so my morning routine includes walking by the lake in my neighbourhood.
You don’t have to start your day in overwhelm mode, rushing from one task to the next. Creating a simple morning ritual that allows you to set the intention for how you want to feel & how you want your day to progress can be a game changer. It was for me!
