Time management, focus, & preparation are important in order to complete all the tasks assigned to you within the week. Having ample time to rest is also a contributing factor to a productive work week.

Here are four important steps to take so that you can start the week strong. 

Sleep, rest & relax during the weekend

If you feel weak even before the week has started, then you’re most likely going to be demotivated & defeated. The most important step to prepare for a productive week at work is to make sure that you’ve had the chance to unwind & recharge physically, mentally & emotionally. 

How should you rest well to get yourself in top shape for another busy week at work?

First of all, catch up on much needed sleep. If you’ve been waking up & sleeping late, make sure that you allow your body to heal & replenish. Good sleep is essential in improving brain function, & it keeps you alert & quick on your feet. If machines need to shut down to keep them from overheating & to ensure that they continue running flawlessly, so does the human body. 

To improve the quality of your sleep, drink warm milk or chamomile tea before bedtime. These contain tryptophan that helps you sleep easily.

Also, regulate gadget use at night. When you are about to sleep, keep away from your phone or tablet. The blue light from these devices make it harder for you to fall asleep, & reading or watching a movie on your gadget makes your brain busy when it should start to relax.
Another way to prep your body is to make sure that you eat right & exercise.

If you’ve been missing meals, make it a point to eat complete & nutritious meals during the weekend. If you’ve spent most of the time sitting down in front of your computer at the office, take a walk or jog around town during the weekend. 

When you are well-rested, your brain can process information & solve problems better. 


You’ve got a pile of papers on your desk, several email meeting invitations lined up, & other pending things to do. Where do you start?

Instead of becoming overwhelmed, take a deep breath & list all the things that you need to accomplish. Then use the Eisenhower principle to identify your tasks according to level of importance & urgency.

How do you differentiate the two? 

• Important tasks need to be completed so that we achieve our goals, such as following up a client so that you can close a deal and reach your sales quota.
• Urgent tasks need to be completed immediately, or else you will suffer the consequences of not performing them on time.

Now, group your tasks accordingly:

• Important & Urgent

These activities are usually unforeseen & have been put aside until the last minute. The best way to handle them is to allow some time in your schedule to attend to items that fall under this category. Another thing is to avoid procrastinating so that you don’t have to rush things. Also anticipate activities or tasks so that you can put them in your schedule.

• Important but not Urgent

Properly plan these activities within your schedule & aim to complete them within the timeframe that you’ve set. If you keep putting them off, they’ll end up in the category above & put unnecessary pressure on you.

• Urgent but not Important

These activities can be moved around your schedule easily. They are not really part of your goals & are mostly just a result of other people passing off their work to you. There should be a limit to your kindness in absorbing office work from other people so that you are not thrown off track from your schedule. It is best to politely decline from these types of tasks.

• Not important & not Urgent

You don’t really have to do them, so scratch them off your to-do list.

Avoid multi-tasking

Multi-tasking leaves you frazzled & unfocused. It will actually slow you down, &, when multi-tasking, you accomplish less.

To avoid being in this situation, go back to tip #2 above.

Take a breather once in a while

When you start going around in circles & you’ve lost your concentration, take a break. Clear your mind for a few minutes, stand up & walk around, or perhaps get some snacks. Don’t push yourself too much, & give your brain the opportunity to regroup its ideas & reset the thought processes.

You also need to stretch & move around every now & then to keep the oxygen flowing through your body to make you think better.

The key to maximising office productivity is to keep your body & mind healthy. This is why you have to stop to relax & rest. This is also the reason why you should prioritise & make a schedule so that things will be easier on you. The more pressure you put on yourself, the less effective you will be in performing your duties for the week.
